Israel is home to many foreign refugee and migrant families, people who fled other countries and are building life here while their legal status, housing, and language skills are already stretched thin.

When sirens sound and cities tighten under pressure, not every household experiences the crisis in the same way. Some families live in crowded apartments without a reinforced safe room. Others struggle to understand alerts, apps, and rules in Hebrew or English. Children may spend the day in fear with nowhere that feels truly protected. And when schools close or move online, parents are left holding both worry and the need to keep learning alive.

This is why we focus on more than calories. A warm meal restores energy and routine. Learning materials, tutoring, or a quiet hour of schoolwork support, even modest, help a child feel that tomorrow still includes growth, not only survival. For refugee families under acute stress, food plus education is a way to say: you are seen; your children still have a future here.

At Beacons of Mercy, we are working to support programs that combine emergency food relief with practical help for children’s schooling where families are most exposed, so that no child has to choose between eating and believing that class still matters.
